Timing and Spectral Behavior of the Rapid Burster

چکیده
We present an X-ray fast-timing and spectral analysis of the type II bursts and the persistent emission (PE) of the Rapid Burster observed with the EXOSAT Medium-Energy Instrument. The Hardness-Intensity and Color-Color Diagrams of the Rapid Burster are somewhat different from those of the majority of other low-mass X-ray binaries, which fall into two distinct groups, “atoll” and “Z” sources. The strength and frequencies of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) in the bursts and the PE, as well as a strong anti-correlation between QPO frequency and burst peak flux, also distinguish the Rapid Burster from atoll and Z sources. The presence, frequency, and strength of QPO in type II bursts are all correlated in some manner to the spectral hardness, as are the strength of QPO and the very low-frequency noise (VLFN) component in the persistent emission.

The Evolution of Rapid Burster Outbursts
We describe the evolutionary progression of an outburst of the Rapid Burster. Four outbursts have been observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer between February 1996 and May 1998, and our observations are consistent with a standard evolution over the course of each. An outburst can be divided into two distinct phases: Phase I is dominated by type I bursts, with a strong persistent emission...
متن کاملSearch for Millisecond Periodicities in Type I X-ray Bursts of the Rapid Burster
We have searched the rising portion of type I X-ray bursts observed from the Rapid Burster with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer for the presence of periodicities. The 95 per cent confidence upper limit on the average root-mean-square variation of near coherent pulsations with a width of ∼<1 Hz (in 60–2048 Hz) during the first second of the bursts is <8.8 per cent. We find a possible detection (...
متن کاملAstronomy and Astrophysics the X-ray Timing Behavior of the X-ray Burst Source Slx 1735–269
We report for the first time on the rapid X-ray variability of the galactic bulge source and X-ray burster SLX 1735–269. The power spectrum as observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer is characterized by a strong band-limited noise component which is approximately flat below a 0.1–2.3 Hz break frequency; above this frequency the power spectrum declines as a power law of index 0.9. At the h...

متن کاملLetter to the Editor Detection of a broad iron emission line and sub-millisecond quasiperiodic oscillations from the type I X-ray burster 4U 1728-34 in a high state
We report results from simultaneous RossiXTE and BeppoSAX observations of the neutron-star x-ray binary and type I X–ray burster 4U 1728-34. The source was found in a high luminosity state, LX ∼ 0.1LEdd, and quasiperiodic oscillations were detected at 1284±6 Hz, the highest frequency ever observed from this source. The x-ray spectrum shows a broad, FWHM ∼ 0.8 keV, iron Kα fluorescence line. We ...
